Hi. I'm Jeff
Hi! I’m Jeff. For over 20 years I've built a career as a freelance graphic designer, crafting brands and being lucky enough to enjoy the work I do. Technology has always moved fast in my industry, but the emergence of powerful new Artificial Intelligence tools are beginning to reshape not just my industry but many industries across the world. Talk of an oncoming AI revolution can be heard everywhere. Many painting a picture of a utopian vision where humans will be set free from work, enabling us to engage more in our passions, communities, family and friends. How AI will be a silver bullet to many of our problems and improve our lives immeasurably.

Whilst this vision could be true, Pandora’s box has been thrown wide open and no one knows how the future will play out. Currently there seems to be a deafening silence on what should be done about the messy grey area that leads up to this utopian vision. From where I currently stand career wise, this feels like a grey area I’m staring straight into and its quicksand, beginning to pull me in with absolutely no escaping from it.
But “surely it’s not AI that will take your job, it’s someone using AI that will”, is what I hear. And I agree to some respect, and whilst I’m working on how these tools can be used to help me in the now, with the dizzying speed of AI development, I’m incredibly doubtful that the role of a Graphic Designer will exist in the imminent future.
Writers, Copywriters, Photographers, Web Developers and Graphic Designers to name just a few industries, are currently at the forefront of this disruption with their feet slowly slipping into the quicksand with nowhere to turn. It’s a scary place to be and governments are notoriously slow to react and until they are forced to. “But in the Industrial Revolution, old professions were lost whilst new professions emerged”. True, but this AI race feels different. It has the potential to eliminate countless professions lightning fast with nothing in place to mitigate the displacement.
My career, once a source of pride and stability, has become a source of real stress and anxiety about the near future. Sleeping was never an issue, but I’ve found myself really struggling with the negative thoughts of the what ifs of AI career disruption. How would I support my family? What work could I do if my job no longer exists? Am I too old to retrain? If I did retrain, how do I know AI won’t eventually take that job? How do I bring in an income equivalent to my existing earnings? Would I lose my house? Would the stress turn me to alcohol? What job would give me worth? What does a world without work look like? What would my purpose be?

I’ve found these worries have begun to also hit me in waves throughout the day and I’ve started to feel a sense of dread, loss and grief over my career. A feeling of being trapped in darkness. And whilst I know this is all focusing on the negatives, these are real and pressing questions that I’ve struggled to answer.
I’ve realised there will be others who are facing the same AI-driven job disruption stress and anxiety. A community that is growing, which can relate to each other and should be talking to each other. This is why I have setup purposebeyondai.com and the Facebook group, with a mission to bring our ever-growing community together so we can help navigate the emotional, psychological and practical challenges of AI-driven job disruption and loss.
So, my new purpose is to bring those stuck at the forefront of this AI job disruption together. To talk. To be open. To try and help forge a positive path through the quicksand. To build a movement that can eventually put pressure on governments to start planning and legislating for the effects of mass AI job disruption. But in the now, to help those who are struggling to see a way forward
So please join me and help build a place to be heard. To listen. To share stories. To learn from one another and engage in healthy discussion. So together we can help navigate the emotional, psychological and practical changes of AI-driven career disruption and loss.
My mission is to bring our ever-growing community together to help navigate the emotional, psychological and practical challenges of AI-driven job disruption and loss. To help find purpose and identity and forge a positive path forward.
